Oct 11 Jodhpur

Cow care center

On the way I stopped to visit a cow care center, where 500 sick and homeless cows are cared for until ready to return to their normal lifes. There are several cow care centers all over India. Wealthy animal lovers support the centers. In India the cow is considered sacred or very holy. Hindus respect cows for their gentle nature which represents the teaching of ashima (means non-violence), and a person who follows ashima does not slaughter cows or eat meat.

Sun City

Jodhpur is known for its year round warm and sunny weather. It was 95 degrees F when I was there. It is known as the 'sun city' or 'blue city' for its blue houses around the fort. Lonely Planet lists it as an extraordinary place to stay. Abhiras were the original inhabitants in 4th Century, and later Aryans spread here. Between 1540 to 1556 Afghans were in control of Jodhpur and most of northern India. The handcraft industry is a key part of the economy, and white marble furniture made here is considered the best in the world. I visited a store selling white marble tables, but did not buy one. One of the biggest attractions here includes Mehrangarh Fort which sits high above the city. I attended a musical festival there at 5am, along with hundreds of people from all over the world. Delicious chi tea was served to everyone for free. This was a great experience.
